EIC Accelerator Stage 1 assessment
A realistic demonstration of the qualitative Stage 1 deliverable. No numeric score or GO/NO-GO is invented.

THERMALOOP · Short application review
Traceable priorities for strengthening the technical breakthrough, customer case and financing rationale before submission.
Shortened structural preview: An actual paid report is substantially longer and more detailed. This sample shows how the review is organised and written, while a real report contains more findings, criterion analysis, evidence tracing and proposal-specific corrections. THERMALOOP and every fact below are fictional. The required video pitch is outside this review and has not been assessed.
Executive verdict
ExcellenceConvincing with reservationsRelevant pilot evidence is present, but the breakthrough is not quantified against the closest alternative.
ImpactNot yet convincingThe market headline is large, while the reachable first segment and buyer conversion evidence remain thin.
Risk, implementation & needConvincing with reservationsThe core team is credible, but the financing gap and market-failure counterfactual are not evidenced.
Overall readiness: The innovation story is understandable and the pilot result is promising. The current short application is unlikely to withstand a sceptical market and financing review until the applicant converts top-down claims into a customer-specific entry case and explains why private capital cannot yet fund the remaining risk.
Completeness and material limitations
| Item | Status | Review treatment |
| Stage 1 short proposal | Reviewed | Technology, market, team, financial needs and implementation assessed. |
| Pitch deck | Reviewed | Extracted text and cross-document claims assessed; visual persuasiveness cannot be fully judged from text extraction. |
| Video pitch | Outside scope | No inference made about speaker delivery or video quality. |
| Official call material | Not supplied | Programme-level review; live eligibility and submission conditions still require applicant verification. |
Highest-priority findings and repairs
High priorityImpact · Market
The reachable market is replaced by a top-down percentage
- Location
- Proposal §2.1, Market opportunity; deck slide 6
- Evidence
- The proposal cites a €9.2bn industrial-heat market and assumes 1% penetration by year five. It does not identify the first buyer segment, number of reachable sites, sales cycle, conversion rate or price basis.
- Why it matters
- The evaluator cannot distinguish a large market from an obtainable opportunity or test whether the revenue forecast follows from realistic customer acquisition.
- Correction
- Replace the 1% assumption with a bottom-up beachhead: named segment and geography, reachable sites, decision-maker, annual contract value, qualification rate, conversion rate and timing. Reconcile the result with the five-year revenue table.
- Re-review test
- Every year-one to year-five revenue figure can be reproduced from stated accounts, conversion, price and deployment timing.
Model-answer pattern: “Our initial segment is [buyer type] operating [N] eligible sites in [geography]. We can reach [N] through [channel]; at [%] qualification and [%] conversion, [N] deployments at €[X] produce €[Y] revenue by year [Z].”
High priorityExcellence · Breakthrough
The technical improvement has no named baseline
- Location
- Proposal §1.2, Innovation; deck slides 3–4
- Evidence
- A pilot reports 18% lower energy use, but the operating conditions and comparator are absent. “Best-in-class” appears without a named alternative or source.
- Why it matters
- The evaluator cannot tell whether the result is a material step-change, a site-specific efficiency gain or an artefact of different operating conditions.
- Correction
- Name the closest technical and customer-status-quo alternatives. State the baseline, test conditions, sample duration, measured result and remaining validation uncertainty.
- Re-review test
- The breakthrough claim is reproducible as comparator + metric + conditions + evidence + defensibility.
Model-answer pattern: “Against [named baseline] under [conditions], THERMALOOP changed [metric] from [A] to [B] across [test duration/sample]. The remaining uncertainty is [X], tested next through [validation].”
Criterion-moving gapNeed for Union support
The financing gap is asserted rather than demonstrated
- Location
- Proposal §3.3, Financial needs
- Evidence
- The proposal states that venture investors consider the project “too risky” but gives no dated investor evidence, declined financing conditions or counterfactual timeline without EIC support.
- Why it matters
- The EIC rationale depends on a credible explanation of the remaining risk and why market actors cannot finance it on acceptable terms now.
- Correction
- Add a funding-source table covering discussions, date, amount, stage, investor condition, unresolved risk and the milestone that would change the decision. Explain what is delayed or cancelled without support.
- Re-review test
- The requested support connects to a named risk, milestone and financing counterfactual rather than general preference for non-dilutive funding.
Proposal–deck consistency
| Claim | Proposal | Deck | Verdict |
| Pilot energy reduction | 18% at one industrial site | “20%+ proven saving” | Tension—align figure and conditions |
| Commercial launch | Q3 2029 | 2028 | Broken—one launch plan required |
| Funding ask | €2.5m grant + €6m equity | €8m total round | Coherent if the split is stated |
Three strongest elements
- A specific industrial pain point with a credible technical founder team.
- A pilot result that can become persuasive once its comparator and conditions are disclosed.
- A plausible European scale-up route anchored in an existing integrator relationship.
Revision order
- Rebuild the market and revenue chain bottom-up.
- Calibrate the breakthrough against named baselines and align the deck.
- Evidence the financing gap and counterfactual.
